How to Rank Highly in the Search Engines

Access to your website is primarily through the search engines. Therefore, your site needs to be found by the top search engines such as Yahoo and Google. These search engines can be your best ally in generating internet traffic. As well as leading to more sales, it provides free advertising of your business or service.

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the technique of making your website rank highly in search engine databases according to the relevance to the user’s search. To be successful in the search engines, you need to have articles and keywords based on the words that users look for on the search engines.

It is important to submit your site to the main search engines. When you do this, you need to use optimised keywords to increase your ranking. This is particularly so in a highly competitive industry. By doing so, you will attract more potential buyers toyour site.

When optimising your website, it pays to bear in mind that text is what the search engines take notice of, not graphics. It is therefore imperative that you have good written content on your site.

A good investment if you’re serious about search engine optimisation is software that helps you determine the most searched for keywords in your industry. This will let you focus on optimising your website with the most relevant keywords.

Another area of focus is the text on your home page as this is the first thing search engines read. In the opening paragraph, use as many keywords and key phrases as possible. Also, your website ranking will be better if your HTML tags are consistent with your text.

Do some research to find the right search engine for your business needs but certainly don’t overlook the big three, which is Google, Yahoo, and MSN. These will be crucial to your marketing efforts.

When submitting your website to search engines, consider these important things:

1. Does the search engine generator give updates?
2. Does the registration process let you include your purpose?

To give more chance of potential customers finding you easily, you should register your website with as many search engines as you can.

Search engines use a program called a spider that browses the internet and looks for web pages that have been visited. If you overuse keywords, this spider may bypassyour site and it won’t be included in search results. It is known as keyword abuse so it is important to get the balance right.

Some websites also don’t use their listed keywords in their content and therefore the spider doesn’t acknowledge it. This means your web page won’t be indexed. It is therefore a waste of your time coming up with lots of irrelevant keywords just to haveyour website overlooked by the search engines. Remember, keep it relevant to what your site is about.

One of the main objectives for your online business is building up a database of customers and potential customers. If your website delivers on its promises, you will begine to get repeat customers which are the backbone of your business. To do this well, you need to communicate with these customers and potential customers using some or all of the following:

• Affiliate programs
• Newsletters
• Banner ads
• Discussion groups and forums

Your data should consist of information collected through previous sales, customer communications and email lists. There are several sources of useful and relevant data to build a successful customer database including:

• customer order forms
• warranty card information
• servicing information
• records of returned products
• questionnaires filled out at time of purchase

Use this information to ascertain what it is that your customers want to see and hear. After getting to know as much as possible about these customers and potential customers, you can correspond with them much more effectively.

Selling Online: Make Money off of eBay

These days, lots of people want to earn a little extra cash. Few realize they already have the tools to help erase credit card debt, start a new side-business, and earn a little extra money for monthly expenses, or even tuck away for long-term investing opportunities.

How can you make some extra money? Try selling online and make money off of eBay.

You don’t have to be a major player to earn extra money to stash into your savings account. All you have to do is read a little, explore a little and become familiar with the eBay online auction system and you can get started. You don’t even have to have a particular product to sell.

Start with some of the extras you have around your home – DVDs, CDs, collectibles (baseball card collections, signed books, vintage clothing and toys, etc.)

It’s easy for anyone over 18 to register – even teens can sell online if Mom or Dad registers and opens an account on eBay. If you want, you can even create and design your own personal web page or blog to link to when you’re finished.

Read the many guides offered on eBay to learn how to sell, list items and upload photos of things you want to sell. Once you create an account, you’re ready to get started. Any money you earn from sales can be deposited directly to a PayPal account, which keeps transactions organized and easy to follow.

Every time you complete a transaction on eBay (buying or selling), you will receive feedback. This type of rating system will stand you in good stead if you’re prompt with shipping and delivering what the bidder has purchased.

Describe items accurately, and send what you promised. You’ll get good feedback. If you don’t send items in a timely manner, or send a product that’s damaged or broken, you’ll get negative feedback, which won’t help you find buyers in the future.

Pay promptly and deliver promptly; those are the keys to success with eBay. This is a good point to remember. In addition, while the majority of buyers and sellers on eBay are honest, hard working people trying to make some extra money, there are some bad apples in the barrel.

Always check the feedback rating to see how other people like or don’t like another seller. Many times, a fraud can be exposed in this manner. If you’re not sure of something, check with the eBay company support system, which usually responds to questions or issues in a very timely manner.

You can really have some fun and make money at the same time with eBay. They offer all kinds of free tools and guidelines to make your selling endeavors easy, successful and enjoyable.

Try eBay at home, at the office (only when the door’s closed) or anywhere you have access to a computer. Sell a few things or open your own storefront in eBay and make that extra cash you need for gas, your utility payments, or heck, even a mortgage payment.

You can make as much money as you want selling in eBay – your efforts will be matched in income. Look around your home for things you no longer want or need and then get ready to make money off of eBay.

Online Businesses Doing More With Less In An Uncertain Economy With Web Optimization Solutions

Ever gone online and had a frustrating experience? Maybe you weren't happy with the way content was displayed or found it impossible to find what you were seeking. That's the unhappy picture that visitors face when shopping on websites that have not been fine-tuned (or "optimized"). The good news is, companies realize that not enhancing their websites lowers their revenue and profits and are now doing everything they can to improve online shopping experiences in a recessionary economy.

Increasingly, large online retail companies are turning to testing and targeting technology to enhance consumers' online experiences. Multivariate Testing allows companies to present many variations of information and discover which variation you prefer while targeting enables companies to understand you better as a customer so that they can deliver relevant information, such as coupons. This brand of web optimization can help drive Internet sales during a time when visitors are holding on tight to their wallets .

One example of a business using testing and targeting technology to enhance the customer experience is well-known destination site VEGAS.com, which features a plethora of Las Vegas travel and hospitality choices -- from hotels to shows to tours to front-of-the-line nightclub passes, and then some. More than 2.5 million visitors visit VEGAS.com websites every month. The company found that it needed to get a handle on how best to present their vast array of travel and hospitality choices in order to keep visitors online.

To do that, VEGAS.com ran a test to discover what combination of online security messaging components would be most conducive to increasing sales conversion rates for site visitors. The business simultaneously tested four security elements, three text treatments and their layout on five different places within the site to discover the winning combination. The winning variation produced significant improvements across multiple key performance indicators, including site abandonment, visitor page views per session, and overall conversion rates.

Overstock.com, the well-known Internet retailer offering brand-name merchandise at everyday low prices, follows a similar approach to VEGAS.com. In relatively little time, Overstock.com maximized its conversion rates and average order values by globally testing new product page designs against current page layouts.

Another web site you might have shopped online that takes testing seriously is CSN Stores, which offers more than one million goods on more than 200 web sites in niche market sectors.

CSN Stores has credited testing and targeting business SiteSpect with creating 7 percent of its 2007 sales growth, thanks to the SiteSpect's patent-pending A/B and multivariate testing solutions. SiteSpect allowed CSN Stores to easily run tests to determine visitor visitor responses to variations in site content, search functionality, and features. Based on the test results, CSN Stores enhanced its search capability to help customers more quickly find the products they wanted, improving the user experience and increasing sales. Also, CSN Stores was able to discover and use alternate image sizes that elicited higher response rates.

Eric J. Hansen, president and founder of SiteSpect, says businesses have a multitude of choices when it comes to getting started with testing and targeting.

"We're seeing more and more businesses move from simple A/B testing, where you test one or more variations of a single element to see which one your consumers choose, to multivariate testing, where you try out variations of more than two elements," Hansen said. "Multivariate testing shows you not only which combination of elements increased conversions, but also shows you which individual elements influenced visitor behavior versus those that did not."

"During a recessionary economy, it is more crucial than ever for Internet consumers to find what they want and have a satisfying shopping experience," Hansen summarized. "Internet marketers must test and optimize their websites to generate more traffic to a site, keep them engaged, and funnel them towards conversions that generate revenue -- or risk going out of business."

Got An Idea? Start An EBusiness

One idea can become a dream. One dream can become a reality. Most of us will leave a dream behind for the sake of raising children, paying bills or keeping a family together.
It’s always “something else” that gets in the way of turning a dream into a reality.
The dream eventually fades after time. It creeps back into the narrow hallways of the mind - every now and again piercing your memories of “what could have been”. All that’s left now is a heavy sigh, maybe, a hollow sadness rustling through your disappointed frame reminding you that you will never be who you wanted to be and you’ll never do what you dreamed you could do.

I mention these things because I had reached my mid – thirties and found myself making those same heavy sighs. Feeling as though I somehow cheated myself out of life, cheated myself out of the possibility of turning my dream into a reality.A dream is hope. Well, without hope, what really is there in life? I was tired of tiptoeing through my valley of broken dreams. I was weary of wandering the hills of heartbreak and hopelessness. So, I decided to do something about it.

I will share with you this: My dream was to start an EBusiness and work from home. I wanted to finally do something that I enjoyed. I wanted to stop the drudgery of my half- lived life. Through the years, I had very much become skilled in the intricate workings of the Internet. I taught myself how to design webpages and learned the skills of a webmaster. I gained knowledge of search engines, back links, reciprocal links, rankings, seo, etc. You name it, I learned it. I wanted my dream to become a reality. I started to publish a daily Ezine (electronic magazine) to get myself familiar with the daily workings of on line publishing and Internet audiences. I figured if I started out small, then I could move up to bigger things – like my dream.

The Ezine started off slow. In fact, the readership numbers were discouragingly low but, when pursuing a dream, you some times get disappointments, set backs if you will, to drive you harder and to remind you that turning a dream into a reality is not for the weak willed or faint-hearted. Little wonder why some have chosen to live with the “heavy sighs” rather than deal with the scars and punches that meets you on the road to dreams. At least I was giving it a try, which was far better than burying my dream in the graveyard of crushed ambitions. After about 6 months of “day in and day out” researching for daily topics and ideas, my Ezine started to do well. It hit Page 1 of Google and before I knew it, it was sitting in the number one spot in all the major search engines. Was it generating money? Well, … no. If you measure success by the amount of money that one has earned well, you may just say my effort was wasted and my “dream chasing” was in vain.
It wasn’t. I proved to myself that I could pursue my dream and through diligence, it would eventually become a reality.

After about 9 months of publishing my Ezine, I decided to make the leap into establishing the EBusiness that I had been dreaming about for years. I bought the domain name and found a web host and moved into the final phase of “idea = dream, dream = reality”.
To fast forward you to today, I will tell you that about 11/2 years have passed and I now have a successful EBusiness. (Fulfilling your dreams doesn’t have to take years to do). Everything I learned from my start up days with my Ezine has benefited me a great deal.
All the directory submissions and press releases for web promotion have helped my current business to thrive. Submission after submission has actually been incorporated to my current EBusiness. NOTHING was in vain! Struggles, yes, I’ve had a few. But my hopelessness is gone and my life has returned.

A final piece of advice: If you dream it, you can do it. It won’t be easy but with persistent diligence and honorable intentions, your dream can become a reality. My idea was anEBusiness. What’s yours?
